Getting your hands dirty Family activities

Is a plant a living being? Can it feel things, breathe and travel?

This family activity, aimed at children aged 6 – 12, will help them towards a better understanding of the plant world; they will discover that a plant actually needs as much attention as a pet.
A tour of the Jardin des Méditerranées is as good a way as any for them to grasp this idea. Equipped with magnifying glasses, the children go off to discover the plants. Some are hairy, others sting; some even smell bad! In fact the plants possess more than one secret weapon to help them survive…

A plant does not grow in isolation: it needs the birds to help it reseed itself, the bees to help it reproduce and the inhabitants of the soil to help it feed itself. There’s a whole world waiting to be discovered in the gardens.
Once they have filled in their booklets and absorbed all the ideas contained in them, they just need to put these into practice.

It’s time to get gardening! The children are provided with a pot in which to create the perfect soil and sow a few seeds; they can then care for them and watch them grow.
